This was a very in depth process that involved many of the stakeholders in our community. We started with surveying our students in grades 9-12 in the Spring of 2017. The survey focused on gathering feedback surrounding different topics in the school. Topics such as the type of homework, course offerings, fine arts/activity offerings and their overall feelings about the school. A survey was also made available to all community members during Summer of 2017. 240 surveys (electronic and paper combined) were filled out. Questions on this survey looked for feedback on strengths and areas of concern for the school district, what opportunities the district may be missing and challenges that needs to be addressed.
After the completion of the surveys, community meetings were held on a few different occasions to begin to put together overall themes that the school district needed to begin to focus on. These meetings were well attended, and provided a lot of valuable information for the creation of the action plan.
A preliminary action plan was presented at the November school board meeting. From there the plan was shared throughout the community and feedback was sought from board members, staff and community members. After meaningful discussion at board meetings, the board approved our action plan at the January 2018 school board meeting.
I commend our school board for making a commitment to set a clear direction for the Faulkton Area School District. This strategic plan not only provides clear direction and measurable goals, but will hold administration, staff and school board members accountable for the continued success and improvement of our school district. I encourage you to take a look over the strategic plan and contact me if you have any questions regarding the plan. The plan can be found at this link on our school website, http://www.faulkton.k12.sd.us/school-board/fasd-action-plan, or in the superintendent's office as well.
The first semester went quick, and things may not have gone as well as your students may have anticipated, but the good news is, they have another semester to learn from possible mistakes that were made and finish the school year strong. In my morning announcements before Christmas break, I shared with students and staff that "<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">With a new year comes new challenges and new opportunities for growth." It just so happens that with this new year, our staff were given opportunities for growth before heading back to the classrooms.

On Wednesday, January 3rd, Faulkton held an all day staff in-service with the Redfield and Ipswich School Districts. We had staff from all three school districts volunteer to present on educational topics, as well as Dakota State University faculty. This is opportunity for a joint in-service was great and our staff embraced the opportunity for growth. Our morning keynote was given by Corinne Hoisington that day, and she gave a couple of breakout sessions as well. Corinne presented on new educational resources that are available to improve the teaching happening in the classroom. She shared a lot about Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, and how we can expand what we offer our students in the classroom, even being in rural South Dakota.

Another topic she presented was on "Emerging Career Trends". It was very interesting to hear what the actual job outlook is for our students. We have many students throughout the United States that are choosing majors and professions that have a very bleak job outlook. As educators and parents, we need to ensure that we are preparing our students for realistic jobs in the future. Some of the most popular majors are Exercise Science, Small Animal Veterinary, and Psychology, and they have the WORST job outlook. Believe it or not, the careers with the BEST job outlook are in the fields of Data Science, Data Engineer, Analytics Manager, and many others. I do not recall hearing of these when I was considering a career path. In light of this, we need to shift our message to our students about their future careers and expose them to new avenues. It may seem as though their future employment is "forever" away, but it is closer than we think. A complete Top 50 list can be found here: https://www.glassdoor.com/List/Best-Jobs-in-America-LST_KQ0,20.htm.

As we begin a the New Year, I challenge us to look for new opportunities for growth in our own lives. It is easy to stay comfortable on the path we are on, but exploring new paths can lead to growth for ourselves and those around us. If we are stagnant we will become obsolete. Let's work towards becoming/staying relevant, even when it is not easy to do so.
Thank you to everyone who helped in any way with the activities that happened throughout the week. We have a great bunch of students and it was fun to see them enjoying the week. Coronation started us off on a great foot and the dress up days and FFA Ag Olympics carried us through the week to the elementary games and grill out, parade and pep rally. It was great to see our students compete in various sporting events and have some success. With it having been such a great week of positive events and fun, it got me thinking about what I have been trying to focus on as a leader for our school district and on a personal level as well.

POSITIVITY.

I have been reading a couple of books lately by Jon Gordon. Jon writes about positivity in your life and the direct correlation between success and positivity. I was first led to "The Power Of Positive Leadership" from a leadership course I am taking. After reading this book I began to do a lot of self-reflection and wanted to know more about positivity and positive leadership. I came across another book by Jon Gordon called "The Energy Bus for Kids", which I purchased and read with my kids. The reading level of this book is probably middle or upper elementary, but the concepts can be explained to younger elementary students. A couple of weeks ago I chose to read this book to the 5th grade class. The main focus of this book is making the choice, every day, to be positive and make positive choices. The choices that we make on a daily basis affect everyone around us. We can choose to take a left and head down the negative road, but we all know what that leads to. We need to take a right, focus on the positive, set positive goals, and show our positivity towards others.

While reading this book with the students it was very evident that they know what is right and what is wrong. They know that their actions can not only affect themselves, but also those around them. What this book helped drive home for me was that our students are looking to us as parents, teachers, administrators, school staff and peers for positive direction. We have the choice every day to wake up and either set our course a positive direction or negative direction. Whichever direction we choose to go will determine our successes throughout the day.

Earlier this school year I had our elementary students start this positive bus ride by setting at least one goal. Some chose to do a couple. They wrote their goal on a sticky note and placed it on a poster in the hallway outside my office. As our students walked past these goals I wanted them to be reminded of what they are working towards. Whether their goal is to "Make New Friends", "Work Hard And Never Give Up", "Get Good Grades", or "Reach 100 AR Points" they need to have a positive focus for the year. I would encourage to stop in and look at our students' goals. Ask your student what they set for a goal this year. If they didn't get one written down yet, have them add their goal to the poster.

Every single one of us, adults and students alike, have the choice to set ourselves on a course of positivity or negativity. I say that we make the effort to smile more, encourage more, set goals for ourselves, and help spread positivity throughout our school and community.
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Perhaps you share advice like
this: Study hard. Get good grades. Go to
college. You can do anything you set your mind to.

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">We all want students to do their
best, so they have better opportunities for bright futures and good jobs. This
school year, I want to encourage you to get more specific. Beyond offering
advice, ask more questions and urge your student to think about his or her
strengths and interests.

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Here are some questions to consider:
What do you like to do, in school and out of school? What are some of your
natural strengths? What are some careers in which your interests and strengths
might intersect? How do you think you might best prepare and train for those
careers?

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">It’s never too early to start these
conversations, either. Even elementary school students can learn from classroom
visitors talking about their jobs or a summertime day camp focused on anything from
computer coding to archaeology.

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Today’s students are likely to have
several careers over the course of their lives, and an ever-increasing number
of jobs require education beyond high school. Simply telling them to go to
college isn’t enough. <span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Every student’s path will be unique. Students
should see a university or technical institute education not as an end in
itself, but as a tool for achieving their career goals.

I hope that everyone was able to enjoy a wonderful summer with family and friends.

This summer has been busy at the school as we have worked to complete the previous school year with reports, complete all the buildings and grounds projects, and also prepare for this upcoming school year. I uploaded a couple pictures at the bottom to show off a few of the projects. The pictures don't truly do it justice. Feel free to stop at the school and check out the amazing work that Janet, Bill, Denny, Jack and the many contractors have completed.

As you may have heard, we have begun a strategic planning process this summer. I am excited for this process, as it will give valuable input to myself and the board as to the direction our stakeholders see us going in the years to come. This process is not focused on any one topic. It is a general process that will help us create measurable and attainable goals for our district as we continue to improve.

Speaking of improvement. Many of our staff members have been attending all sorts of individualized professional development throughout the summer to help them become better educators for your children. Thank you to our staff for always wanting to improve and provide the best education for the students of Faulkton Area.

We are excited to welcome five new staff members this year!
- Chase Casper: Computers/Library/K-2 PE
- Mallory Fischer: Pre-School/Jr. Kindergarten
- Voni Hubbell: JH/HS English Language Arts
- Danica Mickelson: K-12 Music
- Cortney Warren: 5th Grade

This school year is set up to be great! I am looking forward to seeing all of the students back in halls and hearing how their summer was. As always, feel free to communicate with me about any questions or concerns you may have.
Recently, Mrs. Geditz's 4th grade class and Mr. Mickelson's 7th grade Social Studies class worked on a project together. Students from the classes teamed up and made presentations on the Southwest Region of the United States.

There are projects like this happening quite often in our building. What makes projects like this so successful for students and teachers are the many opportunities for growth during them.

There may be many differences between those in our community, but I know there is common ground between us all. Just like I had said in my October post, "I am also looking forward to continuing to improve our collaboration and teamwork with our community. The entire community plays an important role in the success of our schools and our children. The ceiling of our continued success is limitless, and involving all of our district community members, business owners, parents, staff and students is vital." Just as these students and teachers work together to further their education and become more knowledgeable, so can all of us. I am very encouraged by what I see happening throughout our community. There are many people and organizations working hard to ensure our continued growth. The responsibility to ensure the continued and future successes of our school district rests with us all. I am proud to say that my family and I are part of such a great community, and I sincerely look forward to the things that we will be able to accomplish together.

The last few words from our school song play in my head when I think about the teamwork, collaboration, and pride that is so evident throughout our school and community. "Firm & strong, united are we."

Go Trojans!

I know that there are many things that happen in our buildings on a daily basis that many never hear about.
In particular, in the past month I have been fortunate enough to have been part of the "Shark Tank" for Mrs. Schlechter's Business &Technology JH wheel course. Part of this quarter long course is to research and develop a new product. Then the team of students has to get "investors" for their product. It is very encouraging to see so many of these students take pride in developing a product that can be very real some day.
Along the same lines, I was on the interview panel for Mrs. Melius' Employability/Personal Finance course. These students spend the semester learning about skills that will help them gain employment at any point in their life. At the conclusion of the semester the students have to create a resume and interview for a position in front of current business people. This is a great learning experience for many students. Being in a small town, they do not always get to experience the pressure of having to interview in front of a panel.
Back in November, Mrs. Geditz's 4th grade course took their field trip to Bill Melius' buffalo ranch. While there the students get to see a working buffalo ranch, learn about the buffalo, and even learn about life on prairie. Here are a few pictures from their trip.

I also wanted to share about a project that Mrs. Montonye does with her students at Blumengard colony. Studentreasures
is an on-line program free of charge to educators. Educators can create a book with a whole class, or individual students can write their
own. The company sends out all materials necessary to create the books, except for markers in the coloring of the pictures. The students work very hard to create a book that they are proud of. Here are a few pictures of the finished product.

Winter has finally started to show
up a bit for us. Some of you may be excited, others not so much. What it means
for myself…making the decision if we are going to have “10:00 am Start” or “No
School”. As we all know, our district is
large, and the weather can be completely opposite from one corner to the
next. I want to let you all know that I
take this responsibility very seriously, and always have the safety of your
children in mind. When the weather is
going to be questionable I am out early driving the roads myself to help make
the decision. I also communicate with
law enforcement, highway crews, and county residents. I know that my decision will not always be
agreed upon with everyone. Please keep
in mind that I will never question your decision to keep your children home if
you feel that roads are not ideal in your area.
All we ask is that you call the school and let us know if your children
will be running late or not coming in. We want to be sure that all students are
accounted for. Please communicate with
the school if you are not receiving any of the school messages. School closings and late starts will come to
the phone numbers your provided at the beginning of the year.

Mrs. Haberling uses readers theater with the 3rd grade to work on fluency and reading with expression. This is one of many ways that our teachers do something a little different than just the "classroom". Not only are these students learning content standards, but also valuable life skills as well.

The education of our students is never ending. I sincerely appreciate the willingness of businesses and community members to take the time to work with our students and provide another component to their education. To educate the whole child, we need to look for outside resources and professionals that can supplement the hard work our staff do in their classrooms.

Over the past few weeks, we have had visitors in our schools, as well as field trips in town and out of town. FEM Electric made a stop to visit our third and fifth grade students to teach them about what cooperatives are, electricity, as well as farm safety. Their presentation was done in the classroom, as well as in the lunchroom and gym. In the pictures you can see the display used to show farm safety, and not pictured was a demonstration of electrical equipment that is commonly used. Dr. Bode, from Animal Health Center here in Faulkton, also made a stop by the fifth grade classroom. Animal cells was the topic of discussion. Students were able to see cells on the Promethean Board through the microscope. It is great to have Dr. Bode share his expertise with this group of students.

Our students have also been very fortunate to have been able to take some field trips as well. Our kindergarten has taken a cross-town hike to the fire department and sheriff's office. The fourth grade took a trip to NSU for the Northern Prairie Water Festival, the seniors and juniors attended the NSU Business Symposium, and Mr. Ulrich took a group of students to Augustana University for Science Day. I know there are probably others not mentioned as well.

The Faulkton Area Schools District thanks our community and surrounding area for giving us the ability to experience so many exciting opportunities for learning. Our staff works hard to provide new and innovative ways to educate our children. Education is ever changing, and I can't thank our staff and community enough for the hard work they put in to make learning meaningful for our students. It takes a village...
I was reminded of this the other day when observing in the first grade classroom for a bit. Cheers so loud for spelling "hip" correctly it made you smile. There is not a day that goes by in this building without hearing the shouts of joy from a class as they celebrate something new that they have learned. Even the encouragement that they give one another while in class is great. Our students are eager to learn and just as eager to help others learn. These are attributes that are learned. Attributes that are taught and modeled to them by our parents and staff. This is what makes Faulkton Area such a great place to be a learner.

The classrooms that our students are in everyday are full of collaboration and teamwork. Teamwork is something that has been a part of my life for a long time. Growing up with a father who was a college football coach, I was on the sidelines of many football games and at many practices. It was evident to me then how important teamwork was. I could see those who were leaders, those who were great team players, and those who were not great team players. Walking through the halls of our buildings and observing in classrooms gives a great picture of what teamwork is. Students helping students, teachers helping students, teachers helping teachers, and students helping teachers. This type of teamwork is what takes a school district to the next level.

I am excited to help support the great amount of collaboration and teamwork that is taking place in our buildings. I am also looking forward to continuing to improve our collaboration and teamwork with our community. The entire community plays an important role in the success of our schools and our children. The ceiling of our continued success is limitless, and involving all of our district community members, business owners, parents, staff and students is vital.
I have been putting this off for some time now, so I have finally decided to take the plunge and begin a blog for myself as superintendent. The mission and vision of my blog is “To engage and communicate effectively with members of our district”. This will be a learning experience for me, so hang with me. I want to provide an area that allows all the members of our school district to see the school district from my point of view. My blog posts will provide a look into our schools throughout the year. I plan to share the amazing things that our talented teachers are doing in their classrooms, the projects and activities that our students are doing, occasional education updates that are important to share, and the experiences I am gaining as a superintendent.
